“Webspam” is what Google is calling everything from overly optimized low quality websites to those low quality spammy backlinks (linkspam) that serve no purpose other than to manipulate the search results.

Some webmasters may believe that the webspam tactics they use are just a different kind of SEO, that the internet is the “wild west” where anything goes – but that line of thought from the 1990s was wrong back then and it is wrong now. If you are lying to Google about the popularity or value of your website, you are not just lying to a big “evil” corporation – you are attempting to deceive your own customers. In short, webspam is fraud.
